Plan a toilet replacement before ordering the suite. Discuss outlet arrangements, room access, usability and the full installation scope with a plumber.

A toilet that looks the same size as the existing suite may not suit the plumbing or the room. Before ordering, ask a plumber to assess the connection arrangement, installation space and condition around the toilet. The useful purchasing decision is about the complete installed fixture, not just the showroom appearance or advertised price of the ceramic pieces.

Describe why you want a replacement

Separate a broken fixture, repeated repair issue and a desire for better usability. If the toilet is overflowing or blocked, report that as a fault rather than assuming replacement is the answer. Note whether the seat, flushing controls or cleaning access cause difficulty. A plumber can explain whether a repair is still practical and which installation constraints matter if replacement proceeds.

Confirm the connection before selecting a model

Provide the proposed product information and photos of the existing suite from safe, accessible positions. Outlet type and position, supply access and the surrounding floor can affect compatibility. Do not remove the toilet to measure concealed connections. A matching nominal size is not proof of a direct swap. Have the installer confirm the selected model and any additional work before placing a non-returnable order.

Check the room as people use it

Allow for door movement, a nearby vanity and room to sit, stand and clean. Different bowl shapes and cistern arrangements can alter that usable space. Discuss comfort and accessibility needs without assuming a taller or larger model suits everyone. In a small bathroom, a suite that fits the plumbing can still make movement awkward, so consider the room plan rather than checking a single dimension.

Agree the surrounding work

Ask whether the scope includes removal, disposal, floor or wall making good, and any additional plumbing assessment. The footprint of the old toilet may leave visible marks when a different model is installed. Existing dampness or unstable flooring needs investigation rather than being covered. In strata properties or rentals, clarify approvals and responsibility before purchasing. Tell the team if this is the household’s only toilet so interruption can be planned.

Keep the handover practical

Confirm operation with the plumber and retain model details, care instructions and the invoice. Ask what to do if water appears around the base or the cistern continues running after use. Do not assume an installation includes every bathroom finish repair unless it is written in the scope. A checked product selection and clear disruption plan are more useful than buying first and negotiating compatibility later.
