Recognise stair changes worth reporting and prepare for professional assessment. Keep people away from unstable steps rather than testing or dismantling them.

A stair that has become loose, uneven or difficult to use deserves assessment because it is part of the home’s everyday access. A new squeak alone does not identify structural damage, but visible movement or a damaged handrail should not be dismissed as a cosmetic annoyance. Describe what changed without deliberately loading or dismantling the stair to investigate.

Keep unsafe access out of use

If a step, landing or handrail appears unstable, keep people away and arrange prompt professional advice. Do not bounce on a tread, pull on a loose rail or send someone else across to see whether it holds. Explain if the stair is the only route to an occupied area so the urgency and access problem are understood. Where there is immediate danger or an injury, seek appropriate emergency assistance.

Record visible changes safely

From a safe accessible position, note the location of cracks, gaps, movement or damaged finishes. Say whether the issue appeared suddenly or gradually and whether a leak or impact preceded it. Do not remove coverings or fixings to reveal concealed supports. Photographs can show the affected step in context, but an image cannot establish the load capacity or condition of parts hidden within the construction.

Separate condition from usability

Explain catching feet, slippery-feeling finishes or difficulty reaching the handrail separately from movement in the structure. These may require different responses. A repair can involve timber, fixings, support, finishes or another trade, depending on the finding. Do not assume a coat of paint, a covering or tightening one visible screw resolves the underlying concern. The professional should explain which observations are cosmetic and which need further investigation.

Ask about assessment boundaries

A builder or carpenter may need additional structural advice, opening-up work or approval information before recommending a repair. Ask what is accessible during the first visit and how any further investigation will be authorised. Existing stairs vary widely, and requirements can depend on the building and proposed work. This guide does not provide dimensions for self-certification or instructions for changing stair geometry. Check property-specific planning and building responsibilities with the appropriate professional.

Agree a safe repair sequence

The scope should explain temporary access arrangements, which components are repaired or replaced and who reinstates finishes. Keep children and pets away from the work area. At handover, ask what was found, what remains excluded and when normal use can resume. Retain the report and instructions. A useful stair repair addresses the cause and access needs, not just the most visible damaged piece.
