Plan a laundry around appliance access, sorting, drying and storage. Prepare a layout brief that coordinates cabinetry, plumbing and electrical work.

A laundry can look spacious on a drawing and still be awkward when appliance doors are open and a basket is on the floor. Start with the sequence of sorting, washing, drying and putting items away. The layout should support those tasks while leaving service access. Choosing cabinetry first can lock in dimensions before the equipment and connections are understood.

Record the actual appliances

Bring model specifications for the washer and dryer, including required clearances and any approved stacking arrangement. Nominal appliance width does not establish the full installation space. Doors, hoses, ventilation and future removal need consideration. If models are undecided, identify that as an unresolved selection rather than asking the cabinetmaker to assume a universal size. A neat enclosure should not prevent servicing or replacing the equipment.

Map the work sequence

List where dirty washing waits, where stains are addressed and where clean washing lands. Decide whether a tub, folding surface or hanging space is most important for the household. A small laundry may benefit from prioritising one clear task surface rather than fitting every feature into the plan. Consider comfortable reach, bending and carrying baskets through the doorway. Keep daily-use items accessible instead of relying on high storage alone.

Coordinate the connected work

Moving a tub or appliance may affect plumbing, drainage and electrical supply. Ask which licensed trades assess those changes and who coordinates the sequence with cabinetry. Do not specify outlet or connection positions from appearance alone. The professional team should check the proposed equipment and site. Known leaks, dampness and unknown older materials need assessment before finishes are removed or enclosed. A new cabinet does not resolve an underlying moisture issue.

Allow for the whole room

Include door swings, windows, floor transitions and ventilation in the layout conversation. Explain whether the laundry shares a bathroom or passage and whether occupants need access during work. Check permissions for permanent alterations in rentals and strata properties. Ask who removes old cabinets, protects retained surfaces and completes patching or painting. If work is staged, establish when appliance connections and normal use will be available rather than assuming uninterrupted access.

Approve dimensions on site

Review the final appliance list and room measurements before manufacture. Request a scope identifying cabinet materials, fittings, connected trades and exclusions. At handover, check that doors and drawers work together and that serviceable items remain accessible. Retain product and installation records. A useful laundry layout is one that works with real appliances and routines, not simply the one with the most cupboards.
