Plan picture placement using artwork dimensions, weight and viewing positions. Prepare a wall layout while leaving fixings and concealed-service checks to the installer.

A picture-hanging plan saves decisions on the day without requiring you to drill anything. Start with the objects, the room and the way the wall is viewed. The installer still needs to assess wall construction, fixings and concealed services. A balanced arrangement on paper is useful, but it does not establish that every chosen fixing point is suitable.

List the objects clearly

Measure each frame or mirror and record the weight if it is provided by the manufacturer or can be established safely. Photograph the back and existing hanging hardware where accessible. Large mirrors, unusual frames and fragile art may need a different scope from small framed prints. Tell the team about damaged or missing hardware. Do not assume one supplied hook is appropriate for every wall or that decorative cord is a structural fixing.

Create a layout without holes

Use a sketch or safely removable paper templates to compare spacing and relationships to furniture. Consider the wall from the doorway and normal seated positions. A group may look different once a sofa or sideboard is in place. Keep the layout provisional so the installer can adjust for suitable support. Avoid adhesive products on delicate finishes unless the wall and product instructions support their use; a temporary planning aid should not create a repair.

Consider what is nearby

Mark visible outlets, switches, windows, doors and fixed cabinets. Their locations are context for the professional, not a map of concealed services. Tell the installer about known plumbing, previous alterations and uncertain older wall materials. NSW asbestos guidance explains that even small drilling tasks can disturb hazardous material. Do not make exploratory holes or scrape coatings to identify the substrate. If assessment is needed, settle that before installation.

Clarify permissions and special positions

Obtain approval for permanent fixings in a rental and check any relevant strata restrictions. Discuss heavy items above beds, seats or frequently used walkways with the installer rather than treating all positions as equivalent. A professional may recommend a different location or method. Ask who supplies appropriate fixings and whether removal of old hooks, patching or paint touch-ups is included. Existing marks can remain visible even when the new arrangement covers some of them.

Confirm the finished arrangement

Walk through the proposed layout before work begins and agree how changes will be approved. At handover, ask about the installed hanging method and any use limitations. Keep product information for unusual or heavy pieces. Future relocation needs a fresh assessment rather than reusing any convenient hole. A useful plan combines appearance with safe support and clear scope, without turning a template into permission to drill the wall yourself.
