Plan a gas cooktop installation with the right appliance details, access and trade coordination. Understand assessment, testing and the handover.

A new cooktop needs to suit more than the visible hole in the benchtop. Appliance specifications, gas type, supply, clearances and nearby cabinetry all need checking. Have a licensed gas fitter assess the proposed installation before buying a model on the assumption that it is a direct replacement.

Share the appliance details early

Provide the brand, model number and installation instructions, along with the current cooktop details if available. Tell the fitter whether the property uses natural gas or LPG if you know; do not alter a connection or appliance setting to investigate.

Gas type and appliance configuration must be confirmed by the professional. A product being the same nominal width does not establish that the cut-out, clearances or connections match. Photos of the surrounding kitchen and an accessible cabinet interior can help with an initial discussion without dismantling anything.

Expect checks beyond the cooktop

The fitter will assess the proposed position, supply arrangement and relevant installation requirements. The rangehood, splashback, cupboards, nearby surfaces and access beneath the appliance may affect the plan.

Any benchtop alteration is a separate consideration that must be assessed for the material involved. Do not cut, grind or drill the benchtop yourself. If the appliance needs an electrical connection or a fixed outlet change, arrange an electrician for that work rather than treating it as part of a DIY gas replacement.

Prepare the kitchen for the visit

Clear the benchtop and the agreed access area beneath it. Discuss building access, parking and when the kitchen will be unavailable. Keep children and pets out of the work area.

  • Confirm who removes and disposes of the old appliance.
  • Clarify whether cabinetry or benchtop work is included or separately arranged.
  • Ask how unexpected supply or clearance issues will be approved.
  • Keep the new appliance instructions and supplied components together.

Testing and a useful handover

Use licensed gas fitting and appliance installation services for the connection and checks. Ask the fitter to explain operation, any relevant safety features, the completed testing and what installation documentation applies to the job.

Never test for a leak with a flame, disconnect a hose or attempt to adjust gas components. If you smell gas or suspect a leak, stop using the appliance, avoid ignition sources and leave the area. Seek urgent assistance from a safe location; do not wait for a routine installation appointment. Retain the product instructions and fitter’s paperwork so later servicing is based on the installed appliance, not a similar model.
